Grand Finals Sunday 17th August
Unfortunately neither the u15s or u17s were able to bring home a flag to complete the 2008 season.
The u15s never really managed to get going in their game against a really strong & skilled Mill Park. It may have been that the energy sapping game in the Mernda mud from a week earlier had taken its toll.
However the boys never gave up and continued to battle to the final siren.Well done to the Vince & the Boys, who have done the club proud by taking on all challengers. To have managed to get to the 1st Division Grand Final has been a great achievement.
The u17s started their game with a flurry ,with 3 quick goals before Epping had a chance to settle. A couple of dubious goals late in the quarter seemed to swing the balance however .Epping really went on the attack in the 2nd Qtr and took a solid lead into the 1.2 time break.
The 3rd Qtr was a torrid affair , the Cougars throwing out a solid challenge, however were unable to bridge the gap. While the boys were able to marginally win the final qtr the Epping boys were a deserving winner of the flag .To Robbie & the boys , congratulations on a successful season under some trying conditions.
Good luck to the boys who have now finished their junior careers at Alphington , many of whom will now head to Northcote Park next season. To the rest see you again next year when you will be joined by the u15s to combine into what should be a really strong Cougar outfit.

Preliminary Finals
u10s- Unfortunately the u10 Cougars were frozen out of the finals by a strong Lalor team. In freezing wind and rain the young Cougars struggled to adapt to the conditions. They were unable to display the football skills that had got them this far and Lalor were able to better adjust. Well done to have gotten this far and hold your heads high as you dream of next season .
u15s
It was a hard slog in the Mernda mud pile for the u15s Cougars.
While outplaying Research nearly all day but unable to show it on the scoreboard, the 15s finally managed to hit the front near the end of the final quater. What an exciting and desperate game it was ,with everyone on both teams giving it all. It was a great effort to finally come out on top in such trying conditions..Good Luck in the Big One against Mill Park next week

u17s
Conditions didn't get any better for the 17s , as the another downpour hit the ground for the start of the match. It was tough going & an even contest for the first half and didn't get any easier as the day went on. But gradually the boys pulled away enough to get a buffer of 14 pts by 3/4 time. It mightn't sound much but in the conditions it was a good lead. Final qtr & Keon Park threw everything at them but with the defense continuing to hold well ,the boys managed another couple to pull away .
There was much celebrating in the showers after the game as they realized that they too were heading to a Grand Final playoff. Good Luck

Finals week 1
U10s- Whittlesea got the jump on the Cougars at Epping on Sunday.
Taking advantage of the wind Whittlesea got a two goal break in the first quarter. Second quarter the Cougars began to start to play a bit of team footy & although neither team scored in the 2nd there were signs of life in the Cougars.
3rd Quarter saw some real Cougar action as they combined to get goals on the board & were a real chance going in the last. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts the boys were unable to bridge the gap and went down by 8 points. Hopefully they can sort out Lalor this weekend & then get to Whittlesea for a rematch.
u15s.
Eltham, at Thomastown, took full advantage of the prevailing wind to goal to a good 6.7 to 2.2 lead at qrt time. In the 2nd with the wind the Cougars wasted a number of opportunities early on before finding their range and slamming thorough 6 goals to 1 for the qtrs. In the third qtr the Cougars pretty much sealed the game with outstanding efforts to kick 4 goals to 1 against the wind. This allowed the boys to turn on an exhibition in the final qtr kicking another 8 goals to go to a great win.
Now the boys have to get the heads back to earth & regroup to take on the strong Research outfit this weekend.
U17s vs Epping
After a good solid start to the game where the boys managed to hold a 1 pt lead at qtr time, they got blown away in the 2nd qtr with Epping piling on 8 goals to 1. The 3rd saw the Cougars put a spirited fight back to outscore Epping and if the kicking for goal had been better (4-7), they would have been in a much better position going into the last. As it was the Boys really tried hard in the last but were unable to bridge the gap going down by 53 pts. There were plenty of good signs to come out of the game & hopefully some lessons learned for the future.
This weekend the boys take on a revitalised Keon Park, which promises to be an interesting contest to see who will play off in the Grand Final.
Good luck to all teams hopefully the will the 3 team in the Grand Finals on the 17th August
End of Home and Away Season Wrap
>Great to see our U10s, 15s & 17s make the finals this year. Make sure we get along and support the mighty Cougars and hopefully we can being home 3 flags for the club. Our U13s just missed out on a finals berth after coming up a Division following the grading games. This team has come in leaps and bounds and 2009 has a very positive outlook for them. Our U12s also rose a Division following the grading games and were competitive throughout the season who also as a group have come a long way in their individual and team football development. Our U11s began and remained in 1st Division and were very competitive with a number of wins and 2 draws and taking it up to the top team (and un-defeated team for last 3 years) on two occasions. Next year looks exciting for this Cougar team. Whilst the season is over for some and hopefully a premiership for others, now is the time to think about next year, have a chat to your mates at school and convince them to come on down and play with the Mighty Cougars in 2009.
>On 22 July 2008 a Special General Meeting was held to vote upon a motion to change the name of the club to the Northcote Junior Football Club. Although there was an enormous majority in favour of the change we have experienced some Constitutional issues that need to be rectified before we can make any type of announcement. We continue to work on this matter and we are hopeful that we will be able to notify players, parents and members of the outcome. Stay tuned.
>Presentation day is scheduled for 31 August at Northcote Park Football Club (Bill Lawry Oval, Westgarth St). Further details to follow.
>The date for our Annual General Meeting will be set soon for some time in September. All Committee positions will be open and we urge everyone to consider how they can contribute to the running of the club. Whilst you may not be able to nominate for a position, you may still be able to volunteer time to support the committee. Many hands make light work in this area to get teams on the field each week whilst building the club for the long term. If you wish to discuss this matter, please contact Simon Bailey on 0423575157
